Local Filing Assistance

Alternatives Federal Credit Union's Free Tax Preparation Program If you earn less than $55,000, Alternatives Federal Credit Union can prepare your Federal and New York State Income Tax Returns.  To determine if you qualify, visit Alternatives FCU's eligibility webpage

To make an appointment:  If you live in Tompkins or Cortland Counties, call 2-1-1 Monday–Friday 9:00am–5:00pm. If you live outside those counties, call toll free at (877) 211-8667.  2-1-1 workers will walk you through the requirements and what documents you need. Then, they will make an appointment for you. This service is completely free as long as your income is $55,000 or less.

If you are comfortable working with tax software and want to try filing on your own, or if Alternatives FCU has referred you here in the past, you can use their Facilitated Self Assistance partner at myfreetaxes.com. Your federal and state returns will be free as long as your income is $66,000 or less. Links to this site will also be available during the normal Free Tax Preparation Program hours at Alternatives, so you can use AFCU's equipment and get help with any questions you might have.

NOTE: If you are self-employed (Sch. C or received a 1099-MISC), please fill out Alternatives FCU's self-employed worksheet before calling 2-1-1 to schedule your appointment.

Lifelong Learning's Free Tax Preparation 2019Lifelong Learning will be holding free tax clinics weekly, between January 31st and April 13th.  These tax clinics are open to the following:

  • All seniors age 60+ (with spouses of any age)  
  • All individuals with disabilities
  • All individuals with incomes below $32,000
  • All families with incomes below $55,000

Returns are prepared by IRS trained and certified volunteers, and  some complex returns may not qualify.  To schedule an appointment, call the following numbers Monday through Friday, between 9:00am and 3:00pm:  for an appointment at Lifelong Learning call 607-262-4136, for an appointment in Trumansburg call 607-882-0070.

Lifelong's free tax clinics will take place on Thursdays from 9:00am to 4:30pm, and Fridays & Saturdays from 9:00am to 1:00pm, by appointment only.
