Family Storytime: Is Back!! Let's Talk Shapes!
It's great to be back!! So nice to see familiar and new faces :)
There are more wonderful shapes books than you can shake a square at! (Oh my, that was an awful joke! However, I'm leaving it in ; ) But I can only pick a few books for storytime, so here's what we read today:
Round by Joyce Sidman; Ills. by Taeeun Yoo
Round is a Tortilla by Roseanne Greenfield Thong; Ills. by John Parra
The Happy Little Yellow Box:A Pop-Up Book of Opposites by David A. Carter (Our Office Ref copy)
I hadn't read Round before, but I came upon it while researching shapes books for today, and I loved it. The jacket blurb says: "Look closely - how many round things do you see? The sun? The Moon? A rock? A raindrop? A seed? Here is a charming, lyrical look at why we love round things, from the small details of everyday life, to the vast and ancient forces that shape our world." I couldn't have said that better :) It's a lovely book - check it out sometime!
I love Round Is a Tortilla for those wonderful Hispanic flavors Thong and Parra share with us while exploring shapes.
The Happy Little Yellow Box may be a [super fun pop-up] book about opposites, but it also presented a wonderful way to highlight what's next in the shapes world for our little ones: 3D! Our Happy Little Yellow Box may start out as a square, but watch what happens as the book comes to a close - the square becomes a cube!
We had a fun felt board today which takes Bill Martin Jr.'s Brown Bear, Brown Bear premise and uses shapes. I added googily eyes and smiles to my felt shapes :)
Shapes Felt Board

Orange triangle, orange triangle, what do you see?
I see a blue diamond looking at me!
Blue Diamond, blue diamond, what do you see?
I see a green rectangle looking at me!
Green rectangle, green rectangle, what do you see?

Yellow star, yellow star, what do you see?
I see a purple circle looking at me!
Purple circle, purple circle, what do you see?

Let's shake it up with Shapes! Make some felt (or paper) shapes with your kids and try this at home!
Shape Shake!
You put your (circle, square, triangle, rectangle) in,
You put your _____out,
You put your _____in,
and you shake it all about!
Wave it in the air and then
You touch it to your toes,
That’s how the shape shake goes!
Can you think of any other shapes you can shake to?
Check out the booklist at the end of this post for more books about shapes!
See you next time,
Miss Kelly
