Program Description

About this event:

In the last few years there has been a movement to ban many graphic novels and comics and books depicting LGBTQ+ characters are major targets for removal from school and library shelves. Many of these books provide sensitive, realistic depictions of queer characters and offer a safe space for young people to learn about different gender identities. In honor of Will Eisner Week, this program celebrates some of the best of these texts with a dramatic reading of excerpts from graphic novels like This One Summer, Laura Dean Keeps Breaking Up With Me, and Mooncakes.

Registration is encouraged but not required.

The Graphic Novel Advisory Board promotes the use of graphic novels to enhance literacy and to provide an outlet for creative writing and art, especially for young people. They work with libraries to help expand and enhance library collections to make graphic novels more available for readers of all ages. Made up of Ithaca College students, they write reviews, publish newsletters, give presentations, run workshops, and complete site-visits to help librarians curate their selections. Visit their website for more information.
