Program Description
About this event:
Celebrate ReUse2!
As a response to ever-filling landfills, overproduction, and diminishing natural resources, CELEBRATE ReUse2! is meant to inspire visual artists and community members to continue shifting the paradigm and take reuse to a new level. Creative reuse enlightens and sparks imagination, demonstrating that artistic creativity and learning can take place anywhere and everywhere—and with all manner of materials—and that “junk” has value for those who can see meaning and aesthetics beyond the discarding of things. Work in this exhibit incorporates materials that would otherwise be thrown away. This show is a partnership of Tompkins County Public Library and the Ithaca ReUse Center. Artists include Victoria Romanoff, Alice Muhlback, Alice Gant, Diane Colman, Robin Tropper-Herbel, Emily Sullivan, Clari Pennels, Teresa Yatsko, Nancy Malina, Eva M. Capobianco, Lauro Robert, and Maude Rith. In the Avenue of the Friends through the end of February 2020. Curated by Robyn Wishna.
Ithaca Giant Revealed!
At 6:30 pm, CAP Artist-in-community Scott Hitz will reveal his enormous Ithaca Giant Puppet. Come see what this community-inspired giant puppet looks like and what story it has to tell.
(Im)migration
(Im)migration is a mixed-media work by a team of Ithaca 12- and 13-year olds, reflecting on what they learned about migration and international friendship during the summer of 2019. At that time, a group traveled to Valle de Bravo, Mexico, to participate in an international chamber music festival. Later that summer, some of the group made new friends from Canada. Motivated by these newfound international friendships, the group invited some friends from Ithaca to join them in learning about migration, immigration, and current events at the US-Mexico border, and to create an artwork in response to their summer experiences. The final group numbered about a dozen participants here in Ithaca, and a companion project is underway in Valle de Bravo.
The group extends special thanks to: Augusto Diemecke and Christine Lowe-Diemecke, who directed the chamber festival in Valle de Bravo, Mexico; Estelle McGee, who shared her expertise about US immigration law and current events; Tommy Beers, who provided studio space for the project; Shamsi Brinn, who organized summer learning and work sessions and guided the project, and Mónica Beck, who hosted the chamber festival and is leading the companion project in Valle de Bravo.
Sneakers, Skateboards and Toys Collection
Local artist Jay Stooks will be displaying rare sneakers, skateboards, toys and other related artifacts from his private collection. Over the last two decades, collecting sneakers, skateboards, and toys has evolved from a pastime of an underground subculture to a booming mainstream passion. Jay has spent the last 10 years curating a unique display that will highlight the art and artist of these collectibles.
