Expanded Makerspace Hours, ‘Mending Meetups’ coming in March

Tompkins County Public Library is excited to announce added special programming and extended hours for its Makerspace.

Starting in the first week of March, the Makerspace will add a lunchtime availability to its open hours on Wednesdays from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Open hours on Thursday will also begin at 3:30 p.m. instead of their previous 5:30 p.m. start time. In total, the new changes will expand Makerspace open availability from 12 hours per week to 16 hours per week.

Makerspace Hours:

  • Maker Mondays: 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. (Teens only, ages 12-18)
  • Tuesdays: 3:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. (Adults 16+, ages 12-15 with a guardian)
  • Wednesdays: 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. (Adults 16+, ages 12-15 with a guardian)
  • Thursdays: 3:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. (Adults 16+, ages 12-15 with a guardian)
  • Fridays: 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. (Adults 16+, ages 12-15 with a guardian)

In addition to the expanded hours, TCPL is also partnering with apparel technician Susan Ashdown to host Makerspace Mending Meetups March 13, April 3 and May 1 during open hours. The event is aimed at helping people with holes in the knees of their pants, missing buttons, or other minor tears learn how to adjust, repair and alter their clothing. Ashdown is retired from Cornell’s Department of Fiber Sciences and Apparel Design and is passionate about reducing material and clothing waste.

Other programs in the Makerspace include Queer Craft Club from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. the second Monday of each month, as well as 1-on-1 sessions by appointment throughout the week.

The TCPL Makerspace’s high-tech tools and art materials include a laser cutter/ engraver, 3D printers, Cricuts, sewing and embroidery machines, jewelry making supplies, a button maker and more.
