Jean Jeffrey of Dumfries, Scotland was the inspiration for Robert Burns' poem "I gaed a waefu' gate yestreen" (I went a woeful way yesterday night). Jean came to Tompkins County, New York during the early ears of the nineteenth century, as the wife and widow of William Renwick. |
