City of Ithaca Proclamation

City of Ithaca Proclamation

Text of Proclamation

Whereas, Ithaca Reads is a program that has evolved into an event embraced by a broad spectrum of neighborhoods, businesses, schools, civic organizations, and Tompkins County residents; and

Whereas, Ithaca Reads is a way to build an intellectual and social rapport among students, faculty, and community members; and

Whereas, Ithaca Reads is an effort to encourage reading, and even more important, encourage us to talk together and to one another; and

Whereas, Ithaca Reads is a great starting point for people to read and explore different literature; and

Whereas, Ithaca Reads shows a commitment from the community to support lifetime learning and the love of reading; and

Whereas, Ithaca Reads allows for a collective experience of reading, thinking, and talking about a challenging text; and

Now, therefore, I, Carolyn K. Peterson, Mayor of the City of Ithaca, do hereby proclaim 2006 as the year of:

A Cornell/Community Collaboration of Ithaca Reads The Great Gatsby in the City of Ithaca

In Witness whereof, I have hereto set my hand and caused the great seal of the City of Ithaca to be affixed this the 2nd day of August 2006. Carolyn K. Peterson, Mayor
