  • Film Screening of The Grapes of Wrath at Cornell Cinema

    Cornell Cinema will offer one showing of a 35mm archival copy of the 1940 version of The Grapes of Wrath. Stuart Y. McDougal, a local, retired film professor who has written about the novel/film in his book Made Into Movies: From Literature to Film (1985) will introduce the screening.

  • Professor Clete Daniel Presentation at The History Center

    Professor Clete Daniel, professor of American labor history in the ILR School at Cornell University and author of Bitter Harvest: a History of California Farmworkers, 1870 – 1941, will offer a presentation and showing of Pare Lorenz’s film The Plow that Broke the Plains.

  • Discussion by American Rust Author Philipp Meyer at the Tompkins County Public Library

    The Grapes of Wrath is often referred to as a “great American novel.” This year, local author Meyer’s book American Rust was hailed by critics as joining this esteemed rank. Meyer will be discussing his novel and looking at “the Great American Novel” in the world of literature.

  • Steinbeck and the Land Performance at the Tompkins County Public Library

    New York City-based actor Anthony Newfield will be performing his one-man show, Steinbeck and the Land, which celebrates the writing and dialogue of John Steinbeck. A frequent presenter and performer at the Steinbeck Festival in California, Newfield has also performed his show in several venues in New York City.

  • Johnny Russo and Friends Musical Performance at the Tompkins County Public Library

    Many people might not be aware that the title, The Grapes of Wrath, comes from the second line of The Battle Hymn of the Republic. Music was an important part of the Depression era, from folk songs to uplifting music to help people forget their troubles. Johnny Russo and his musical friends will be performing a variety of popular songs from the Depression area.
